MASSAGE AND SPA CONTRAINDICATIONS
Fever: When you have a fever, your body is trying to isolate and expel an invader of some kind.
Massage increases overall circulation and could therefore work against your body's natural defenses.
Inflammation: Massage can further irritate an area of inflammation. Inflamed conditions include anything that ends in itis, such as phlebitis (inflammation of a vein), dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), arthritis (inflammation of the joints), and so on. In the case of localized problems, you can still massage around them, however, avoiding the inflammation itself.
High blood pressure: High blood pressure means excessive pressure against blood vessel walls. Massage affects the blood vessels, and so people with high blood pressure or a heart condition should receive light, sedating massages, if at all.
Infectious diseases: Getting a massage is likely to make symptoms worse for someone coming down with a cold, the flu or diphtheria, for example, and is also inconsiderate of others as you would be exposing your therapist(s) and our other clients to the virus as well.
Hernia: Hernias are protrusions of part of an organ (such as the intestines) through a muscular wall.
Osteoporosis: Elderly people with a severe stoop to the shoulders often have this condition, in which bones become porous, brittle, and fragile. Some types of massage may be too intense for this condition.
Varicose veins: In application directly to the problem area many massage modalities are contraindicated. However several lighter massage techniques and bodywork modalities exist that can be very beneficial.
Broken bones: Most kinds of massage directly over the problem area are contraindicated. A light massage to the surrounding areas can improve circulation and be quite helpful.
Skin problems: rashes, wounds, bruises, burns, boils, and blisters, etc. If these problem areas are
local, massage may still be administered in other areas.
Cancer: Cancer can spread through the lymphatic system, and because massage increases lymphatic circulation, it may potentially spread the disease as well. Simple, caring touch is fine, but massage strokes that stimulate circulation are not. Always check with a doctor first.
Other conditions and diseases: Diabetes, asthma, and other serious conditions each has its own precautions, and you should seek a doctor's opinion before receiving a massage.
HIV infection: HIV can't be transmitted during a therapeutic massage session. So, HIV infection is not contraindicated for this reason. However, some of the infections that appear in later stages of AIDS are contraindications to massage. Loving, soothing contact is extremely important for people at any stage of infection, but in the case of any visible rashes, sores, lesions, or swelling, massage is best left to a professional. Our therapists will wear gloves when working with an HIV-infected person with any signs of open lesions. Any other reasonable precautions deemed necessary for the comfort of our therapists may be taken.
Just a minute here! All this makes it sound like you practically have to get a medical checkup and a nod from the doctor before getting a massage, doesn't it? Well, in many cases, that's exactly what it means. Always err on the side of caution when you're considering getting a massage when you have any health concerns. Talk to your physician first.
Our foremost motto is "Do no harm," and if any of our staff believes that you have a contraindication, we reserve the right to not administer services or to stop the session at any time until the issue is resolved, unless you have a written doctors note that allows such procedures. We are not responsible if you arrive for your appointment with a contraindication. Please ask if in doubt before you book your appointment. Refund and cancellation policies apply.
Above is not an all inclusive list of contraindications, so before you book your appointments, for your own peace of mind it is best to let us know about any concerns you may have that may preclude your spa or massage session. Your money for the session will not be reimbursed outside of our refund and cancellation policies.
