Syrium Day return trip

Overview

The attractive town of Thanlyin (Syriam), a short drive from Yangon, is the site of an oil refinery established during the British colonial period. The Kyaik Khaut Pagoda is the town's most famous and its annual pagoda festival in February is the closest to Yangon where one can see a country fair of that size. Further away is Kyauk Tan Pagoda in the middle of a river, its glass mosaic decorations flashing in the sunlight. The small but busy morning bazaar near the jetty is typical of those in any small Myanmar town. The route from the Thanlyin Bridge to this pagoda is lined by monasteries and pagodas, lotus covered lakes and small wooden houses in traditional village style.
